Intervention by IFAP President Ajay Vashee at the World Economic Forum 2010: Will Soil Become More Precious than Oil?

In order to be able to feed the world population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050, agriculture needs to double its production worldwide within a strained resource base and under a changing climate.
To achieve this, agriculture needs to be more productive at the same time as being more sustainable. A new model of a modern agriculture needs to emerge. A “knowledge based and people centered” agricultural model should be built on an integrated and global long-term vision and a commitment from governments to involve all the stakeholders including farmers in the sustainable development of agricultural and rural economies.
But how do we do this and what does this mean? This is precisely the question that IFAP farmer leaders are trying to answer in creating IFAP’S Vision of World Agriculture in 2050.
