Optimization of water use - on-farm irrigation in Jericho
Palestinian farmers are encouraged to adopt innovative approaches to optimize their use of water and fight water shortages. To reduce the risks of negative climate change impacts on farmers’ livelihoods, the Palestinian Farmers Union (PFU) supports farmers in optimizing their on-farm irrigation networks as well as in gaining the rights to manage irrigation water resources by themselves. To achieve water savings and to guarantee farmers a fair access to irrigation water, PFU’s water optimization projects in Jericho City – Jordan Valley – provide farmers with onfarm optimized irrigation systems and trains them on the practical use of such systems.
Optimization of the irrigation systems: Project Benefits The two-year water optimization project led to significant results: more importantly water savings, but also production increase and reduction of inputs. A proper operation and maintenance of the distribution facility is essential to achieve water savings. To better manage an irrigation network, PFU considers essential that the final beneficiaries (farmers) are fully involved in the management. PFU is thus supporting the creation of a Water User Association (WUA) in Jericho. Year: 2009
