Sustainable Development

As defined by the United Nations, Sustainable development refers to "a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Farmers and their organizations are the custodians of the natural resources. Consequently, they are very much concerned about the sustainability of their activities and are therefore willing to act in a responsible way in order to protect the world's resources. Farmers are faced with a big challenge, in that produce more food for a growing population while protecting a deteriorating resource base. However, this responsibility should not be borne by the farmers alone; it must be a shared responsibility that involves all stakeholders to protect the future of our planet.
