PROGRAM
Theme: Outstanding Issues in Agriculture and Impacts on Farm Policies
In this session, leaders from farmers’ organizations will examine with leaders of the main negotiating groups, the issues that have yet to be resolved in the WTO negotiations on agriculture, and how these impact on present farm policies and farmers in different regions.
Welcome address by the President of IFAP, Jack Wilkinson.
Panel of the leaders of the main negotiating groups:
- Australia (Cairns Group) – WTO Ambassador David Herbert Spencer
- Bangladesh (LDCs) – WTO Ambassador Dr. Toufiq Ali
- European Communities – WTO Ambassador Carlo Trojan
- Switzerland (G-10) – WTO Ambassador Luzius Wasescha
- USA – WTO Ambassador Ms. Linnet F. Deily
Each panelist will be given five minutes to present their views on the one main outstanding issue of particular concern to their group.
Panel of leaders from farmers organizations:
- Robert Friesen, President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture.
- Gerard Doornbos, Vice-President of the Committee of Agricultural Organisations of the EU (from Netherlands).
- Tom Lambie, President of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand.
- Fernando Lopez, President of the Comisión Nacional de Fomento Rural of Uruguay.
- Raul Montemayor, General Manager, Federation of Free Farmers Cooperatives of the Philippines.
- Ajay Vashee, Chairman, Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (from Zambia).
Each panelist will be given five minutes to react to the interventions of the panel of negotiators.
